Pin number ie Postal Index Number or Pin Code is the post office numbering or post code system used by India Post, Indian Postal Administration. It is of six digits.
The first three digits of the PIN denote a specific geographical area, which is called a shortening district. Whose headquarters is in the main post office of the biggest city. This is known as shorting office. A state may have one or more shortening districts, depending on the volume of mail. The fourth digit represents the route on which a distribution office is located in the shorting district. The last two digits starting with 01 represent the delivery office within the shorting district which would be GPO or HO.
