Mikhail Gorbachev married Raisa Titarenko in September 1953.
Mikhail Gorbachev was the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1985–1991. He was also the first democratically elected president in 1990. Mikhail Gorbachev was instrumental in ending the communist hold on power in both the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
His aspirations for democracy and reform led to the end of the Cold War and the bringing down of the Berlin Wall. He was removed from the presidency in 1991 during an attempted coup.
Since leaving his post, Gorbachev has worked to promote new efforts for social justice and concern for the environment through his own organization, the Green Cross.
gorbachevGorbachev was born in March 1931 in Stavropol, North Caucasus to a poor peasant family. At the age of 11, the district had been occupied by the Germans for three years, a difficult time for everyone in the village.
In 1950 he enrolled at Moscow University where he became a member of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. It was here that Gorbachev met his future wife, Raisa Maxima, and they married soon after they met.
After earning a degree in law, Gorbachev made great strides within the Communist Party. In particular, he proclaimed two major policies, perestroika and glasnost. Glasnott included political reforms.
This included freedom of religious expression and personal liberty; This paved the way for democracy and the release of many political prisoners.
This was especially important for the Eastern Bloc. When Eastern European economies called for democracy, the Soviet Union did not stand in its own way (as they previously had in Hungary and Czechoslovakia).
On the international scene, Gorbachev expressed his desire to end the arms race:
“We need Star Peace, not Star Wars.”
He has been credited with playing a key role in ending the Cold War, both in the East and in the West. In 1991, conservative military forces attempted a coup where Gorbachev’s life was in grave danger.
The coup ultimately failed but Moscow’s return to political power shifted modernists such as Yeltsin from the Politburo. Gorbachev resigned and never made a successful return to Russian politics.
Goryachev’s wife Raisa Maximova died of leukemia in 1999. They had a daughter, Irina.
Although unpopular in Russia for her alleged role in the breakup of the Soviet Union, she remains an influential voice. Although he had previously supported Putin, in 2011 Gorbachev criticized his third term as Russian president.
He was also critical of the democratic deficit in the 2011 elections. Gorbachev also warned that in Russia. “Politics is rapidly turning into fake democracy” – with all the power in the executive branch.
Gorbachev has also warned against a new ‘cold war’ and argued that the US and the West need to be wary of interfering in Russian affairs and Russian spheres of influence.

Gorbachev has founded Green Cross International – one of the major sponsors of the Earth Charter – a movement to encourage greater concern for the planet and the environment.
Gorbachev has officially stated that he is an atheist. However, at the same time, he has been open to religious influences. He has admired the life of Saint Francis of Assisi, Pope John Paul II, and made friends with the Indian spiritual teacher, Sri Chinoy.
