During Double Marker Test
The way to do this test is quite straightforward. There is nothing new in this. Simply put, it is a type of blood test done with ultrasound. After taking a blood sample, hormones and proteins are tested in it. Hormone is a type of free beta human chorionic gonadotrophin.
The glycoprotein hormone is developed by the placenta during pregnancy. Apart from this, another protein is known as PAPP-A. It is also known as pregnancy-associated placenta. It is also an important protein for pregnant women.
Double Marker Test Result and Normal Range
The double marker test results generally fall into two categories. It is either positive or it is negative. These results do not depend only on the blood test, they also depend on the age of the mother and the age of the fetus found in the womb during the ultrasound.
All these factors work on the result of the test. Compared to younger women, pregnant women over the age of 35 are more likely to develop neurological disorders in their unborn baby.
The test results are given in the form of ratios.
- Ratios of 1:10 to 1:250 are called “screen positive”.
- Whereas a ratio of 1:1000 is called “screen negative”.
Screen negative result indicates very low risk.
In a way, this ratio acts as a pointer to some kind of disorder in the child. That is, from this ratio it is known to what extent the child is safe. Each ratio measures the number of pregnancies followed by a child with a probability of having a disorder.
- That is, a ratio of 1:10 indicates that after 10 pregnancies by that woman, there is a possibility of a disorder in one child.
- Similarly, 1:1000 means that there is a chance of the disorder in any 1 child out of 1000 pregnancies by that woman, that is, the probability is very low.
