How to Link Aadhaar Card with PAN Card: A Step-by-Step Guide

Linking your Aadhaar card with your PAN card is a mandatory requirement in India for filing income tax returns (ITR) and for many other financial transactions. Here are the steps to link your Aadhaar card with your PAN card:

  1. You can check whether your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN card in a few simple steps:
  2. Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal at https://eportal.incometax.gov.in/iec/foservices/#/pre-login/link-aadhaar-status.
  3. Click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option under the ‘Quick Links’ section on the left-hand side of the home page.
  4. Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers in the form provided.
  5. Enter your name as mentioned in your Aadhaar card.
  6. Verify the captcha code and click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ button.
  7. You will see a message indicating whether your Aadhaar and PAN are linked or not.

Alternatively, you can also check the status of your Aadhaar-PAN linking by sending an SMS to 567678 or 56161 from your registered mobile number. The format for the SMS is as follows: UIDPAN<SPACE><12-digit Aadhaar><SPACE><10-digit PAN>.

If your Aadhaar and PAN are not linked, you will need to link them as per the government directive. It is mandatory to link Aadhaar and PAN for filing income tax returns (ITR) and for many other financial transactions in India.

How to Link Aadhaar with PAN Card Online?

Step 1: Visit the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal

The first step to link your Aadhaar Card with PAN Card is to visit the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal at https://eportal.incometax.gov.in. If you are not registered on the portal, you need to register first. Once you are registered, login using your User ID, Password, and Date of Birth.

Step 2: Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’

After you have logged in, you will see a pop-up window asking you to link your Aadhaar Card with your PAN Card. If you do not see this window, you can click on ‘Profile Settings’ and select ‘Link Aadhaar’ from the drop-down menu.

Step 3: Enter your Aadhaar Card details

In the next step, you need to enter your Aadhaar Card details such as your Aadhaar Number, Name as per Aadhaar Card, and Captcha Code. Make sure that the name on your Aadhaar Card matches with the name on your PAN Card. If there is any mismatch, your request for linking Aadhaar Card with PAN Card may be rejected.

Step 4: Click on ‘Link Aadhaar’

After you have entered your Aadhaar Card details, click on ‘Link Aadhaar’ button. A pop-up message will appear on your screen confirming that your Aadhaar Card has been successfully linked with your PAN Card.

Step 5: Link Aadhaar Card with PAN Card through SMS

If you do not have access to the Internet, you can also link your Aadhaar Card with PAN Card through SMS. Send an SMS to 567678 or 56161 in the following format:

UIDPAN<SPACE><12 digit Aadhaar Number><SPACE><10 digit PAN Number>

For example, if your Aadhaar Number is 123456789012 and your PAN Number is ABCDE1234F, then you need to send an SMS in the following format: UIDPAN 123456789012 ABCDE1234F

Step 6: Link Aadhaar Card with PAN Card through Income Tax Department’s office

If you are unable to link your Aadhaar Card with PAN Card online or through SMS, you can also visit the nearest Income Tax Department’s office and submit a form along with a photocopy of your Aadhaar Card and PAN Card. Once the verification process is complete, your Aadhaar Card will be linked with your PAN Card.

PAN–Aadhaar linking penalty

As per the Income Tax Act, linking of PAN and Aadhaar is mandatory for individuals who are eligible to obtain an Aadhaar number. Failure to link PAN and Aadhaar may lead to consequences under the Income Tax Act.

If a person fails to link their PAN with Aadhaar before the deadline, they may be liable to pay a penalty of up to Rs. 1,000. However, this penalty may be waived off if the linking is done before the end of the relevant assessment year.

How to pay 1000 for PAN Aadhaar link?

The penalty for not linking your PAN (Permanent Account Number) with Aadhaar (Unique Identification Number) before the deadline is Rs. 1000 as per Section 234H of the Income Tax Act, 1961. If you have missed the deadline and need to pay the penalty, here’s how you can do it:

  • Visit the Income Tax e-filing portal at https://eportal.incometax.gov.in.
  • Log in to your account using your PAN and password.
  • Click on the ‘Link Aadhaar’ option under the ‘Profile Settings’ section on the left-hand side of the home page.
  • Enter your PAN and Aadhaar numbers in the form provided and click on ‘Link Aadhaar’.
  • If your PAN and Aadhaar are not linked, you will be prompted to pay a penalty of Rs. 1000.
  • Click on the ‘Confirm’ button to proceed with the payment.
  • Select the mode of payment (Net banking, credit/debit card, or UPI) and complete the payment.
  • Once the payment is successfully made, your PAN and Aadhaar will be linked.

Is it mandatory to link PAN with Aadhaar?
